Director of Music

Salary: $13,000-$18,200/year; $250/week for pianist/accompanist only. Additional $100/week if also serving as song leader.

Job Type: Part time - 12 hours/week

Job Description:  

Madrona Grace Presbyterian Church, Seattle, is seeking a person of faith to direct music for Sunday worship, providing piano accompaniment, arranging for special music and rebuilding the choir. Optional: Leading congregational singing.

 Responsibilities:  

  • Provide well prepared, engaging piano (and, possibly vocal) leadership for Sunday morning worship services.

  • Select songs (hymns, anthem, offertory) each week in collaboration with the pastor to support the sermon/scripture with an emphasis on gospel and traditional music.

  • Arrange for soloists, special music and substitutes, as needed; working with congregational and guest musicians.

  • Rebuild a congregational choir, developing community among members and supporting their musical growth.

  • Assist in the planning and execution of special services including Easter, Christmas Eve, etc.

  • Meet regularly with the pastor for review and planning.

  • Collaborate with the pastor and session on any other music-related needs.

  • Maintain compliance with Church Copyright License requirements.

Background/Experience:  

  • Excellent piano skills and ability to read music and improvise with experience in piano accompaniment in a church setting.

  • Directing choir (preferred).

  • Familiarity with Sunday morning worship.

  • Proficiency in a broad range of styles with an emphasis on gospel music.

  • Experience playing with additional instrumentalists.

  • Energy, creativity, strong organizational skills and proven ability to lead and work cohesively with others.
