I was ordained and installed as the new pastor of Madrona Presbyterian Church on July 31st, 2010. Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area (Pittsburg, CA), I first moved to Seattle in 1997 to attend the University of Washington, and have been in love with the area ever since. My wife, Liz, and I met in Chicago while I was attending McCormick Theological Seminary. Our two children, Elijah and Caleb were born here in 2007 and 2012. We currently own a home in Rainier Beach where we keep chickens and bees and fruit-bearing trees.
Theologically I consider myself to be reformed, multi-cultural, and ecumenical. I spent several years in volunteer programs of the Presbyterian Church (USA) and have worked with congregations as far removed as Northern Ireland, the Yakima Indian Reservation, and the South Side of Chicago. Having lived for 8 years in various intentional communities I have a special love for radical expressions of the gospel (See Matthew 25), but am committed to reconciliation and unity in the body of Christ.
Rev. Lawrence (Larry) Low, Pastor Associate, was the interim of Madrona Grace for two years prior to Pastor Mark, and returns after a years absence. He is currently teaching an adult in Bible, and fills in when necessary. He is also a visitor to those who may be having health issues.
Rev. Jennie Spohr (www.jlspohr.com) is a novelist and was ordained to produce and co-hosts the live show and podcast The Kindlings Muse (www.thekindlings.com) which delves into the theology of ideas that matter in culture. She also enjoys teaching about the art of filmmaking and how film, theology and faith can and do come together. She lives in the Montlake neighborhood with her husband, two kids and a fish.
Rev. Skip Viau (www.skipviau.com) has served as a pastor at three Presbyterian congregations in the Seattle area (John Knox, Wallingford, and Capitol Hill) and another in Satellite Beach, FL (Trinity). Skip has a controlled bipolar condition. This, along with parenting two sons and post-graduate studies in marriage and family counseling, has strengthened his skills as a pastoral caregiver. He offers leadership for our retreat ministry and the Madrona Commons. In addition, Skip is an accomplished singer and pianist and a world traveler.
Rev. Marsha Cutting lives on Bainbridge Island. When she is not out sailing she spends her time administering psychological assessments and making use of “Buy Nothing Bainbridge” to organize the Re-Sail project. At Madrona Grace Marsha also sings in the choir and co-leads the Prayer team.
